There was only one problem: where was all the glamour?

1 Aug

There’s a great post from an Auburn student who found an internship at SHIFT Communications. Note how she went about finding the placement and the role social media played in this. Note how she overcame her disappointment that PR isn’t that glamorous.

As Wolfstar’s Chris Norton points out in the comments, the lessons are equally applicable in the UK.

That is a really brilliant write-up of a placement. I love the honesty and that gradual realisation that she did enjoy what she was doing.
I really can’t agree more about the role of social media in getting a job. Not least because I just landed my dream job using social media. More so, I would really advice every student to begin blogging and using social media once they begin their final year. By the time you graduate you can easily have a brilliant number of contacts.

Chris showed me the post as soon as I got into the office this morning! I couldn’t agree more that although some tasks can seem tedious, the experience will leave you with some great skills to help you on your way!

I just thought it was really refreshing to hear that PR execs and interns around the world all have to deal with similar admin tasks. PR isn’t glamourous every day but it can be fun, creative and exciting.
I agree with Richard that a blog is a great way of getting noticed if you are starting out in PR. Get blogging – it’s fun.
