As good as it gets

10 Oct

Teaching should be easy: we should know our stuff (message); we control the means of communication (lecture, tutorial, blog, textbooks, noticeboards); we get to know our audience (students). And yet the results are often more unpredictable than in most public relations campaigns.

So it’s heartening to hear when it works out. Dan Gamble and Karleen Smith graduated this summer; they returned last night to talk to our current students about finding work in PR. I’m very grateful to them and to their employers (Text 100 and Lexis PR) for making the visit possible.

This week the Economist is reporting on the search for talent; PR Week is looking into the revival of graduate recruitment in PR. Certainly, these appear to be good times for PR graduates – as long as they’re strong candidates. Thank you both for sharing your tips on fast-tracking a career in PR.

Do PR graduates have a leg-up on those who graduated 5-7 years ago? Are we dated?

You should have 5 to 7 years’ head start on today’s graduates, so be out of touching distance, Lauren.
But you graduated just as the dot com bubble was about to burst. The last five years have been difficult for PR consultancies in particular. That’s why I’m pleased to report signs of a much more benign job market today.
