And so the job search continues. I’ve seen a couple of opportunities that really interest me and I’m carefully considering my options, but I do still feel a bit confused.
Now I’ve come to the end of my education (which is a scary thing in itself), it’s all got a bit serious now. I think I know what I want to do and where I want to do it, but is there a ‘right’ path I should be taking? Some people have advised me that many PROs start their careers in agencies and then move onto in-house positions further on in their career. But does it really matter?
I believe career success ultimately depends on, among many things, the person, your drive and determination, abilities and some amount of good fortune! I’m curious if by following the agency route straight out of university will be a contributing factor to success, as I’m not entirely sure if this is the road I want to take.
Confused? A bit. And then of course you throw in graduate schemes and freelancing into the equation and things start getting even more complicated!
My thoughts are not to do what you ‘think’ is right but do what you ‘feel’ is right. Find an area of PR that interests you, be it fashion, technology, charity, event management, crisis comms etc and pursue it.
If agency work doesn’t excite you then, personally, I wouldn’t work in an agency. The diversity of roles in the PR profession is, in my opinion, one of the great things about it. You can really find your niche.
I’m going to sound a little (or probably a lot) corny here, but find a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. 🙂
Besides, you will probably be more capable and a lot better at doing something you do like as opposed to doing something strictly for your career. Thus, resulting in career progression anyway.
But good luck either way.
