Read, and act

27 Apr

Via Caroline Wilson, some sound advice on how to be a student.

It’s a pity it needs to be said, because professionals will find it confirms their worst fears. (See several recent posts by Todd Defren.)

I thought the posts made great sense. You know, I find it very sad that some students are not taking their education as seriously as others.
I see students every day who blow off classes, who party too much and just shrug their shoulders when it comes to applying themselves. I often wonder, “If you’re here and don’t want to do the work, why did you come in the first place?” Maybe it’s just me, but I wish they would either get their collective act together or just do us a favor and drop out.
I made a similar comment in response to Erin’s referral to your “Graduate 2.0” post. I like to help people; I really want to see them succeed. I greatly value education, but I have just find I have no tolerance anymore for people who treat their studies as a joke. It’s a slap in the face to the professors who want to instill knowledge and the students who want to help.
Todd Defren has great ideas. Actually, I wish that information was taught in my courses. I’m sure a lot of students wish the same. I’m knowledgeable in PR concepts and other aspects related to the industry, but when it comes to agency and corporate operations, I am clueless. I’m trying to teach myself to learn more about retainers, newswires and other things.
I organized an event where we will host four PR professionals this week in a Q&A panel of sorts. Perhaps I can pose some of these burning questions on behalf of my peers and get the answers I’m looking for.

Whoops, subtract that just find. Missed that when editing.

Thanks, Jenn. I do agree with you and applaud you for saying this.
I try to take an even hand on students (as I implied in my latest post it’s too easy to sound like the ‘old shepherd’) but the following seems clear to me. Public relations is challenging in the real world. It’s becoming ever more challenging. So should PR or communications degree courses become easier? Of course not.

    Agreed!
The sad thing is, many students do just the bare minimum in coursework to “get by,” but they will be in for a rude awakening once and if they reach the field. You know it and I know it. 😉
