The Chartered Institute of Public Relations is moving to 32 St James’s Square, London SW1Y 4JR. It’s a prestigious London address close to the Institute of Directors.
In the letter providing information on the move director general Colin Farrington states that ‘London is the world’s PR hub’. US practitioners in particular will be horrified by this claim from a small European offshore island.
But he has a point: London is arguably the world’s largest media hub (Germany and US have federal systems with multiple media centres); London’s in the middle on the world in terms of timezones (and technically so because of the Greenwich meridian); English is the international language of business and the internet (sorry, France); and the CIPR was founded in 1948 making it, jointly with the PRSA, the world’s oldest professional body of PR practitioners.
