Selwyn College, Cambridge. 1980. A Japanese friend, Hidehiko Hamada (did he later become this Japanese foreign ministry spokesperson?) expressed his horror at ‘women shouting in bars’.
Those pioneering women (Selwyn was one of the first Cambridge men’s colleges to accept women) indeed contained some strong characters (such as Justine Picardie).
Today we’re expected to be outraged by the antics of binge-drinking girls (who are overtaking boys in this as in so many other fields).
