The Institute of Public Relations achieved a minor milestone this week – by passing 8000 members.
No one knows how many people work in public relations roles in the UK (estimates vary wildly from 25,000 to 60,000), but it’s many more than are represented by this professional body. But the IPR is coming very close to gaining critical mass as the voice and regulator of the industry in the UK – I’d suggest that at 10,000 members it will have passed its ‘tipping point’.
I’m fully supportive of this progress, but have to acknowledge that for a body established as early as 1948 it’s slow going.
