The origins of spin

A History Today article traces political spin to the party politics of the reign of Queen Anne, three hundred years ago. This was the period when writers such as Defoe and Swift were enlisted to help with party propaganda and political communications. BBC reports.

The counter argument made by the BBC’s Nick Jones, author of Sultans of Spin, is that what distinguishes political spin today is the politicisation of the Civil Service (not in existence in Queen Anne’s reign).
